Vol. 387 No. 4

Written Answers. - Irish College in Spain.

31.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the authorities at Alacala des Henares are awaiting a formal reply from the Irish authorities in respect of the Irish College at Alacala; the action the Government propose to take in relation to making a small sum of money available to ensure the continuation of the restoration of this historic building and its retention by the Irish authorities for use as an educational and cultural institution in Spain; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The municipal authorities at Alacala de Henares are aware of our thinking on this matter. My understanding of the latest position is that a private foundation has recently been established under Spanish law with a view to receiving ownership of the college from the Alacala authorities and providing for its restoration and administration. The Ambassador to Spain is, ex officio, a member of this foundation.

I believe that the foundation intend launching a fundraising campaign for the college in Ireland and Spain in the near future.

My Department will remain closely in touch with all aspects of the college restoration project.
