Vol. 387 No. 4

Written Answers. - Lorry Parking in Residential Areas.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there is a serious problem in an area (details supplied) in Dublin 7 where container lorries park in residential areas in the early hours of the morning, leaving engines running and consequently causing grave upset to residents; if the gardaí in the Bridewell who were notified of the problem have taken any action; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will appreciate that I have no function in relation to parking restrictions or other regulatory measures imposed under the Road Traffic Acts.

I understand from the Garda authorities that they are aware of the problems caused by container lorries parking in the area in question. These vehicles arrive in the vicinity of the fruit and vegetable market in the early morning because of the perishable nature of the goods on hand, the motors of the refrigeration units are left running. Where this causes a noise problem in the vicinity of dwelling houses the gardaí from time to time get the drivers of these vehicles to move on and I understand that the drivers, for the most part, are understanding and try to park in areas where they will not cause a disturbance. The gardaí will continue to give this problem as much attention as possible, having regard to the many other demands that there are on their resources.
