asked the Minister for Social Welfare (a) the number of 1989 diaries produced by his Department; (b) the cost involved; (c) those responsible for the cost and (d) the organisations in the country to which they were distributed.

The Department produced 10,000 diaries for 1989 as part of the arrangements for publicising as widely as possible its various schemes and services. The diaries were distributed among various voluntary organisations and individuals involved in the provision of social and community services. They were very well received and acknowledged to be relevant and helpful. They were also distributed to all Members of the Oireachtas for information and as a courtesy. I consider they are a practical and whorthwhile way of supplementing my Department's publicity and information services. The total cost of this information package was £10,375. This cost was met from the money allocated in the Department's budget towards advertising and public information.
