Vol. 387 No. 7

Written Answers. - Staff Shortages.

102.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that because of acute staff shortages in some sections of the Revenue Commissioners, workers who are redundant and awaiting essential PAYE tax rebates have been informed it will be some months before they can expect a cheque as in the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 2; if, in view of the hardship that this situation is causing to many people, he will take the necessary steps to ensure that such staff shortages will not result in financial hardship being imposed upon unemployed people; and if will make a statement on the matter.

The Office of the Revenue Commissioners are affected, in common with other Government Departments, by the essential reduction in numbers and costs of the public service. The Revenue Commissioners are making every effort through redeployment and local consultation to minimise any inconvenience to taxpayers.

In the case referred to, the claim in question has now been dealt with and a cheque in settlement should reach the taxpayer shortly.
