Vol. 387 No. 9

Written Answers. - Customs Computerisation.

44.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is still his Department's intention to proceed with the computerisation of customs procedures to meet the 31 January, 1990 deadline as planned.

I recognise the urgency of proceeding with the computerisation of customs entry and clearance procedures in view of its potential benefits both to the Revenue and to the import and export trades.

The Revenue Commissioners, having been advised by consultants, have set up a project team which is at present engaged in the detailed planning of an appropriate system together with consultation with trade interests with a view to making a final recommendation to me by mid-April 1989.

No commitment has been given to a January 1990 deadline and the consultants have advised that such an implementation date is not possible; however they have advised that an implementation date of 1 January 1991 is both achievable and desirable.
