The Commissioners of Public Works have agreed to make a temporary convenience letting of part of the Old Garda Barracks in Dungarvan Castle to the Dungarvan Boxing Club subject to agreement on terms and conditions.
Details and dates of correspondence in this letter are as follows, in chronological order.
16 February 1988:
Deputy Deasy requested officials of the Office of Public Works to meet representatives of the boxing club on site with a view to accommodation the club in the old Garda barracks.
4 March 1988:
Letter received by the Office of Public Works from the boxing club requesting consideration of their accommodation needs.
15 March 1988:
Deputy Swift wrote to the Minister for Justice seeking use of the unused Garda barracks for the boxing club.

I wrote to Deputies Swift and Deasy advising that it had been decided to grant a temporary convenience letting of part of the premises to the boxing club, subject to agreement on terms and that the details would be settled by Officials of the Office of Public Works with the boxing club. I indicated that the Office of Public Works did not have the financial or manpower resources to carry out repairs to the building and that any work required would have to be arranged by the lessees, subject to advance clearance with the Office of Public Works.
8 November 1988:
I replied to two Parliamentary Questions put by Deputies Deasy and De Rossa. I stated that a short temporary convenience letting of part of the premises would be made to the boxing club, pending the building being required for official purposes and subject to agreement on terms and conditions between both parties.

I wrote to Deputies Deasy, Swift and Fahey outlining the area and broad conditions of the proposed letting.
24 February 1989:
The Office of Public Works wrote to the boxing club setting out the main conditions of the proposed letting viz. area, term, rent, rates, access, insurance and responsibilities.
On-the-spot inspections were carried out by Officials of the Office of Public Works on 31 May 1988, on which date they met representatives of the boxing club and others interested in acquiring space in the building and a technical inspection was subsequently carried out on 29 September 1988.
