Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - In-Service Teacher Training.

137.

asked the Minister for Education the provisions she has made for in-service training for those teachers who are taking more than one of the new programmes in September 1989.

For the series of in-services courses in relation to the new junior certificate held 24 February to 13 March, teachers attended a course in one subject only. When these courses have been assessed, it is hoped, where necessary, to give teachers an opportunity to attend an in-service course in a second subject.

138.

asked the Minister for Education the percentage of the overall education budget which is being set aside for in-service training of second level teachers in relation to the introduction of the Junior Certificate course in September 1989.

The overall in-service training allocation for 1989 is £698,000 compared with £311,000 in 1988, an increase of 124 per cent. This allocation represents 0.05 per cent of the overall education budget for 1989 and 0.13 per cent of the second-level education budget for the year. It is intended that the bulk of this allocation will be devoted to in-service training in relation to the new junior certificate syllabuses.
