Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - National School Statistics.

147.

asked the Minister for Education the number of whole time permanent primary teachers employed on 31 December in (a) 1987 and (b) 1988.

The information sought by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department. The total number of primary teachers employed on the specified dates is, however, as follows:

Date

Number of teachers employed

31 December 1987

21,145

31 December 1988

20,403

148.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students attending primary schools on 31 December 1988; and the number who were on rolls on 31 December 1987.

Statistical data on enrolments in national schools are collected on one occasion in each academic year, i.e., September 30 of the year in question. Data concerning the number of pupils enrolled in national schools during the 1987-88 academic year are given underneath.

No. of Pupils Enrolled in National Schools 1987-88*

Ordinary Classes

554,051

Special Classes for Handicapped Children

2,865

Special Schools for Handicapped Children

8,533

Total

565,449

*Data refer to 30 September 1987 and are provisional.

Due to the fact that a number of national schools have not yet submitted statistical returns in respect of the current academic year, it is not possible at this stage to give an enrolment figure in respect of 1988-89. My Department is requesting these schools to submit outstanding statistical returns as a matter of urgency. I would hope to forward an estimate of the number of pupils enrolled in national schools for 1988-89 to the Deputy within the next fortnight.
