Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - Catering Trade Workers.

23.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has any plans to create a joint labour committee for the bar trade or to incorporate the trade in the joint labour committee for the hotel and catering industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At present certain bar staff are covered by the Hotels Joint Labour Comand the Catering Joint Labour Committee. These JLCs apply to workers employed in hotels and catering establishments outside the County Boroughs of Dublin and Cork and the Borough of Dún Laoghaire. They cover barmen/barmaids employed in hotels and restaurants and in public houses where full meals are served.

Under the Industrial Relations Act, 1946, the power to set up Joint Labour Committees rests with the Labour Court. To date no application has been made to the Labour Court by any trade union or by any organisation representative of relevant workers or employers to have either the existing Hotels and Catering JLCs extended or a separate JLC established to cover all of the bar trade.
