Vol. 388 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Library.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the steps he is taking to ensure that the National Library is open to the public in the evenings, as was the practice in the past.

The matter of the opening of the National Library to the public in the evening is under review in my Department. The recommendations of a management survey of the library and a separate security survey are being considered. Discussions will take place shortly with staff representatives in regard to the recommendations of these surveys.

A revision of the opening hours of the library to the public with improved security procedures will be implemented as quickly as possible.

The Taoiseach is aware of the great tradition of scholarship, research and indeed entertainment in regard to evening openings in the National Library. Will he take a personal interest in having evening openings restored?

I have asked the Secretary of my Department, the official primarily responsible, to take the interest which the Deputy would wish him to take in this whole matter.
