Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - Milk Quotas.

45.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of dairy farmers with quotas (a) under 25,000 gallons (b) under 45,000 gallons (c) under 70,000 gallons and (d) over 100,000 gallons.

The quota system in Ireland is operated on a purchaser, i.e. co-operative or dairy, basis. Quota details of individual producers are not held by my Department. I do not therefore have the breakdown requested by the Deputy. However, I understand that a study carried out by Teagasc in 1986 shows that the number of herds producing less than 25,000 gallons each year per year was 42,275; those producing less than 40,000 gallons each was 48,923; those producing less than 60,000 each was 52,643, those producing less than 80,000 gallons each was 54,053 and those producing more than 80,000 gallons each was 1,054.
