Vol. 388 No. 4

Written Answers. - Canal Towpaths.

60.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has reviewed the policy of his Department regarding the maintenance of canal towpaths which carry a considerable amount of vehicular traffic, many of which are in a dangerous condition and which are causing serious problems for the people living along the banks or these canals; and the plans and proposals he has for carrying out urgent and necessary work on these canal banks.

The question of the maintenance of those sections of the canal towpaths which, although not designated as public roadways, carry a considerable amount of vehicular traffic, has been discussed by the Commissioners of Public Works with some of the local authorities concerned. I am hopeful that satisfactory arrangements for the future maintenance of such roadways will be made shortly, taking into account the clear guidelines contained in the consultant's report on the Grand and Royal Canals and Barrow Navigation published last year.
