Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Registered Contractors.

155.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the number of registered contractors in the beef processing industry in each tax district; if he has any concern about the widespread employment of contractors of subcontractors in the beef industry; if he has ever examined any possible implications for full income tax compliance arising from such employment practices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that statistics relating to contractors and subcontractors engaged in the meat processing industry are not compiled by them in such a manner as would enable the information requested by the Deputy to be given.

The Revenue Commissioners are concerned about the possibility of abuses in the operation of PAYE in the meat processing industry where employees may be engaged as subcontractors without any apparent change in their working arrangements. The commissioners are involved in the on-going monitoring of the operation of PAYE in this industry and in other industries in order to identify and counteract such abuses.
