Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Costs.

247.

asked the Minister for Health the daily costs involved in maintaining a patient in each of the general and voluntary hospitals in the Southern Health Board region; the daily costs involved in maintaining a patient in each of the general and voluntary hospitals in the remaining health board areas in the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Up to date information is not readily available in the precise format requested by the Deputy. However, the following are the estimated average daily costs of maintaining a patient in accute general hospitals for the country as a whole in 1988:

£

Health board regional hospitals

155

Health board county hospitals

117

Voluntary teaching hospitals

171

Voluntary non-teaching hospitals

118

Comparable estimated figures for the Southern Health Board area are as follows:

Health Board General Hospitals:

£

Cork Regional

172

Tralee General

137

Mallow General

134

Bantry General

105

Voluntary Teaching Hospitals:

£

Mercy

122

South Infirmary/Victoria

141

The Deputy will appreciate that the cost figures for individual hospitals are influenced by a wide variety of factors such as the range of specialities provided, the existence of intensive care facilities, the volume of out-patient services and the age profile of patients catered for.
