Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Allowances for Officers.

31.

asked the Minister for Defence the reason allowances for officers in technical areas in the Defence Forces have not been increased by the same amounts as the allowances for non-commissioned officers and enlisted men.

Limerick West): There is no direct comparison in the matter of pay between the two categories. Officers who fill certain technical appointments in the Permanent Defence Force receive, in addition to the pay and allowances for their ranks, pay related to their professional qualifications.

Non-commissioned officers and privates who are technicians are divided into six groups on the basis of their skills or trades. A rate of technician pay is prescribed for each group in addition to the basic pay and allowances appropriate to rank.

Increases in remuneration recommended by the inter-departmental committee on Defence Forces pay, allowances and conditions are being implemented in the same way for all ranks.
