Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Permanent Defence Force Tanks.

48.

asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that tanks used by the Permanent Defence Force are only suitable for training purpose and would not be suitable or effective in combat; and if he has any plans to provide modern combat tanks for the Permanent Defence Force in line with those used by United Nations troops.

Limerick West): The Defence Forces have a squadron of Scorpion Tanks which are suitable for a wide range of internal security operations. They were acquired between 1980 and 1986 and were selected because of their suitability for the requirements of the Defence Forces, who regularly engage in training in these tanks.
