68.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the functions of the special detective unit of the Garda Síochána.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 67 and 68 together.

The main functions of the Garda Síochána are to ensure the security of the institutions of the State, to maintain law and order, to prevent and detect crime and to protect the persons and property of the general public. The special detective unit has particular responsibility for combating subversive crime.
