Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Covert Surveillance Operations.

69.

asked the Minister for Justice the Circumstances in which members of the Garda Síochána are authorised to engage in covert surveillance operations: the safeguards which exist in this regard: and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda Síochána engage in covert surveillance operations where this is deemed appropriate in pursuance of their responsibility for the prevention and detection of crime. In such operations as in all their operations, they are subject to the direction and control of the commissioner and, of course, to the provisions of the law.
