Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Computers.

74.

asked the Minister for Justice the nature of the information recorded on (a) the national crime computer and (b) the Dublin Metropolitan Area command and control computer; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The national Garda computer contains information which is of assistance to the Garda Síochána in the prevention and detection of crime — for example, information relating to reported crimes, criminal records, stolen vehicles and other property, and vehicle registrations.

The computerised command and control system for the Dublin Metropolitan Area, which will come into operation shortly, will record details of all reported incidents which require a Garda response and of the Garda resources which are available at any particular time. It will also contain a geographic file to assist Garda controlroom operators to assign the task of responding to a reported incident to the Garda mobile or foot patrol which is closest to the scene. The system is designed to ensure that the necessary response will be made as quickly and as efficiently as possible and to enable Garda management to deploy resources in the DMA with maximum effectiveness.
