Vol. 388 No. 6

Written Answers. - Waterford Disadvantaged Youth Facilities.

50.

asked the Minister for Education if she will immediately take steps to assist the Children's Group Link Centre in Waterford City in acquiring alternative premises, as their present accommodation has been declared unfit for use by the 80 pupils and seven teachers.

I understand that the premises from which Children's Group Link has been operating, with the assistance of a grant of £20,000 from the special fund allocated by my Department in 1988 to projects for disadvantaged young people, is no longer available and that the group are now renting alternative accommodation. The question of a subsidy from my Department towards rental costs can only be considered if a formal application is made to my Department through Waterford Youth Committee in the context of the overall allocation for projects to assist disadvantaged youth in Waterford city.

In addition I wish to say that there are no funds available from my Department towards the cost of purchase of premises. It would not be possible to allocate a grant for the building or renovation of a premises for Children's Group Link Centre under my Department's capital grant scheme as all the funds under this scheme have already been fully allocated.
