Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Policy on Non-Native Trees.

37.

asked the Minister for Energy if he has approved the new policy of clear-felling non-native species such as beech, sycamore and ash which is currently being pursued in Irish forests.

There is no new policy of clear-felling non-native species in Irish forests. A policy of removing, on a selective basis, non-native species from nature reserves was initiated by my Department in the mid 1970's. This policy has been continued by the Office of Public Works since they took over responsibility for the management of nature reserves in 1987.

Any felling of non-native species in nature reserves will be closely monitored by my Department.
