Vol. 389 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin-Maynooth Commuter Line.

94.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if his attention has been drawn to a suggestion of a diminution of safety standards on the Maynooth-Dublin commuter rail service, resulting in a slowing down of commuter traffic, with consequent disruption of commuter timetables; the reason for the concern about safety on the line; and if he will make a statement on the matter, with particular reference to his proposal for the full restoration of the service.

I am informed by CIE that over the past few weeks there were cases where signalling failures led to speed restrictions resulting in delays to rail services. Iarnród Éireann, the CIE subsidiary with responsibility for the railway, make every effort to avoid such delays, which are in the interest of safety.

I am satisfied that there has been no diminution of safety standards on the Dublin-Maynooth line.
