Vol. 389 No. 4

Written Answers. - Aran Islands, Galway, Ferry Service.

93.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he has received an application from Irish Rail for funds to restore and improve its ferry service to the Aran Islands; if he will provide details of that application; and if he will indicate his response to it in view of the vital importance of the service to the people of these islands.

I have received a number of proposals for the replacement and upgrading of the ferry service operated by Córas Iompair Éireann the proposals range from a roll-on/roll-off service involving the acquisition of two vessels, one to operate between the mainland and Inis Mór and the other as a feeder service between Inis Mór and the other two islands, to a limited service confined to freight.

A report received from CIE in the matter was examined in my Department and discussed with CIE. The board are now progressing the matter in the light of that discussion. The Deputy can be assured that the matter is being pursued as speedily as possible.
