Vol. 389 No. 5

Written Answers. - Postal-Telecommunications Services Accountability.

21.

asked the Minister for Communications if he intends introducing an order which would make the postal and telecommunications services answerable under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The introduction of an order of the kind referred to by the Deputy would be a matter for me as the Minister for Industry and Commerce. I can say, however, that because of international conventions of which Ireland is a member international postal and telecommunications services would have to exempt from the liability which the making of such an order would impose. There are significant legal and cost implications for An Post and Telecom Éireann to the making of such an order for national service and I do not propose at this time to impose such cost disadvantages on the companies concerned which would eventually be passed on to the consumer in the form of higher charges.
