Vol. 390 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Kildare Community School.

109.

asked the Minister for Education when she will commit the necessary finance for the provision of a sports hall at Scoil Mhuire community school, Clane, County Kildare.

115.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the application by Scoil Mhuire community school, Clane, County Kildare for the provision of a sports hall or gymnasium; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the school would be prepared to share the facilities with the local community; whether she will give favourable consideration to this request in the current year or at some later date; if she accepts the need for the provision of this facility having regard to the generally restricted space within the school complex; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 109 and 115 together.

The provision of physical education halls in second level schools including Clane community school is dependent on the availability of capital resources and on my Department's commitments and priorities. At present the second level capital allocation available is not sufficient to meet immediately all the requests made by school authorities for additional facilities. Priority is, therefore, being given at present to essential classroom accommodation. It is not possible to indicate at this stage when my Department might be in a position to approve the provision of the physical education hall in question.
