Vol. 391 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - County Dublin Teaching Appointments.

77.

asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction an additional teaching assistant for St. Helen's senior national school, Portmarnock, County Dublin; and when she will appoint a remedial teacher to this school.

The appointment of an additional assistant teacher in this school is not warranted under the agreed staffing arrangements for national schools as agreed between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. The school does not qualify for an exception to be made to these arrangements as it does not satisfy the criteria for developing schools.

A committee comprising of officials of my Department, representatives of the INTO and of management are presently examining the question of disadvantage in primary schools. This matter will also be submitted to the central review committee under the Programme for National Recovery.

asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction a remedial teacher and an additional teaching assistant to Ladyswell national school, Mulhuddart, County Dublin as this school is in a disadvantaged area.

A committee comprising of officials of my Department, representatives of the INTO and of management are presently examining the question of disadvantage in primary schools. This matter will also be submitted to the central review committee under the Programme for National Recovery.

79.

asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction an addittional teaching assistant for St. Colmcille's boys national school, Swords, County Dublin having regard to the fact that enrolment numbers for September 1989 will be increased from 1988.

The appointment of an addittional assistant in this school is not warranted in accordance with the agreement of the staffing of national schools which was reached between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. An exception to this agreement can only be made in the case of a developing school and St. Colmcille's boys national school does not fulfil the agreed criteria to be classed as a developing school.

The school's application was, therefore, refused, but they were advised that the situation could be reviewed if additional pupils were enrolled in the school.

80.

asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction the retention of a teaching assistant at St. Andrew's national school, Malahide, County Dublin as it will not be possible to staff this school adequately otherwise.

The retention of the fourth assistant in this school is not warranted under the agreed staffing arrangements for national schools as agreed between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. No concession can be made in this regard at this time. However, I will arrange for the school's staffing to be reviewed in September next in the light of the actual enrolment situation at that time.
