Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Career Guidance.

372.

asked the Minister for Education the number of post-primary schools which do not have the services of a fully qualified careers guidance teacher.

It is not possible to establish from the Department's records the number of post-primary schools which do not have the services of a fully-qualified careers guidance teacher. All post-primary schools with an enrolment of 500 pupils or more are allocated an ex-quota guidance post. Some 283 posts are currently allocated in this way.

In addition, 55 ex-quota posts were allocated in 1986 to schools catering for disadvantaged pupils and designated as Remedial/Guidance. The utilisation of these is left to the discretion of the school authorities concerned.

A number of post-primary schools have a guidance teacher on the staff within quota but such schools are not readily identifiable.
