Vol. 392 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

154.

asked the Minister for Education (a) if she has any proposals to improve the pupil/teacher ratio at second level schools from the present level of 20:1 and (b) the cost of reducing the ratio to (i) 19:1 and (ii) 18:1.

In consultation with the central review committee, my Department will be considering the question of the pupil-teacher ratio to apply to second level schools.

The estimated full year cost of reducing the pupil-teacher ratio to 19:1 is of the order of £7 million. Costings are not immediately available in relation to the application of a ratio of 18:1.
