Vol. 392 No. 9

Written Answers. - Communications Policy.

9.

asked the Minister for Communications if, in view of the fact that the communications area was not covered in the Programme for Government 1989-1993, he will outline his Department's policy priorities in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The document Programme for Government 1989-93 in the National Interest must be read in conjunction with the other documents referred to in page three, namely, Programme for National Recovery; National Recovery — The Next Phase; National Development Plan — 1989-1993. Taken together these form the basis for Government policy, including policy priorities in the communications area.

10. D'fhiafraigh

den Aire Cumarsáide an mbeidh sé ag cur iachall ar an comhlachtaí cábla agus ar na comhlachtaí a mbeidh an franchise MMDS acu, Teilifís na Gaeltachta a iompar nuair a bhunófar é, sa gcaoi is go mbeidh teaghlaigh ar fud na tíre in ann Teilifís na Gaeltachta a fháil.

D'fhreagair an Taoiseach ceist, ar an 24ú Deireadh Fómhair, faoi Sheirbhís Teilifís trí Ghaeilge agus thug sé le fios go raibh tuarascáil chuimsitheach faoi scrúdu faoi láthair. Ní bheadh sé oiriúnach mar sin an cheist atá curtha ag an Teachta a mheas go dtí go mbíonn an scrúdú thuasluaite críochnaithe.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by An Taoiseach on 24 October 1989 on the question of an Irish language television service which indicated that a comprehensive report is at present under examination. In the circumstances, it would be premature to consider the issue raised by the Deputy.
