Vol. 392 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin Crime Rate.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice if Dublin city has recorded increases in crime in recent months of as high as 25 per cent; and the way in which he plans to respond to this with particular reference to the policing needs of the Finglas, Cabra and Blanchardstown areas.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that provisional figures indicate that the overall level of recorded indictable crime for the first nine months of this year in the Dublin metropolitan area has, in fact, decreased by 6 per cent in comparison with that for the corresponding period last year. They have also informed me that provisional figures indicate that this decrease has not been uniform over all areas — there has been an increase of the order referred to by the Deputy in the Finglas and Blanchardstown subdistricts and a decrease of roughly the same order in the Cabra subdistrict.

I have already in replying to Priority Question No. 52 today outlined the measures that are being taken to tackle crime in the Dublin area generally. The Garda authorities have assured me that the particular policing needs of the areas mentioned in the question and strategies for dealing with crime in these areas are being kept under continuing review.
