Vol. 392 No. 9

Written Answers. - Legal Aid Services.

31.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give an assurance that substantial extra funding will be given to the Legal Aid Board to ensure that those who are less well off can avail of the Judicial Separation and Family Law Reform Act, 1989.

80.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will sanction the appointment of an additional solicitor and one clerical officer for the Legal Aid Office in Tralee, County Kerry to reduce the burden on the existing staff and to provide an adequate service for the public in that town.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 31 and 80 together.

The general situation with regard to the provision of legal services by the Legal Aid Board under the scheme of civil legal aid and advice has been under review for some time to see what can be done to alleviate the board's problems in meeting the demand for those services. The possible effect of the coming into operation of the Judicial Separation and Family Law Reform Act, 1989, on 19 October last is one of the matters being taken into account.

I hope to be in a position to announce the Government's decision in the matter shortly.
