(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Health the present arrangements in the Mid-Western Health Board for specialist medicine; if he intends to appoint any further specialists in the near future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Specialist medical services are provided by the Mid-Western Health Board in the following hospitals.

1. Limerick Regional Hospital

Medicine

Surgery

Paediatrics

Orthopaedics

Geriatric Medicine

Renal Dialysis

E.N.T.

Gynaecology

Ophthalmology

Psychiatry

2. Limerick Maternity Hospital

Obstetrics

Paediatrics (neo-nates)

3. St. Nessan's Hospital, Croom

Orthopaedics

4. St. John's Hospital, Limerick

Medicine

Surgery

Gynaecology

5. Ennis General Hospital

Medicine

Surgery

6. Nenagh General Hospital

Medicine

Surgery

7. St. Joseph's Psychiatric Hospital Limerick

Psychiatric Services

8. Our Lady's Psychiatric Hospital, Ennis

The regulation of the number and type of appointments of consultant medical staffs, including replacement appointments, of consultant medical staffs is statutorily a matter for Comhairle na nOspideal as provided by section 41 (1) of the Health Act 1970 (No. 1 of 1970). Appointments of such staffs approved by Comhairle are primarily a matter for the Chief Executive Officer of the health board.

Comhairle has approved the following complement of consultant posts for the mid-Western Health Board area:

Proposals for the filling of a number of posts within the complement approved by Comhairle are either under consideration by Comhairle at present or are due to be submitted to Comhairle for approval by the Chief Executive Officer of the Mid-Western Health Board in the near future.
