Vol. 393 No. 10

Written Answers. - Scott Bravery Medals.

78.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the basis on which Scott medals for bravery are awarded to members of the Garda Síochána; the manner in which exceptional courage and heroism is evaluated; by whom the evaluation is made; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Scott medals are awarded by the Garda Commissioner to members of the Force who in his opinion have shown exceptional courage and heroism involving risk of life in the execution of their duty. Nominations for the award of Scott medals are made by Garda divisional officers to a reward board, established by the Commissioner, normally consisting of the two Deputy Commissioners and one Assistant Commissioner. The board examine each case on its merits and make recommendations to the Commissioner. The final decision in each case is a matter for the Commissioner.
