Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Community Watch Scheme.

asked the Minister for Justice the steps he has taken to encourage the expansion of the community watch scheme in the Cork city area, in an effort to prevent crime in this area.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that at present there is a total of 29 neighbourhood watch schemes in operation in Cork city, involving some 4,300 households, and that a further five schemes are in the process of being organised. The Garda authorities are satisfied with the operation of these schemes and the level of community support they are receiving.

The Garda authorities have also informed me that there is scope for further expansion of neighbourhood watch in the Cork city area. For their part, the Garda authorities will continue to ensure that every assistance is given to any group wishing to organise a scheme. In the final analysis, of course, any further expansion depends on the willingness of members of the community to voluntarily participate in such schemes.

asked the Minister for Justice the total amount of money paid to solicitors and barristers in legal fees from September, 1988 to September, 1989; the name of each solicitor and barrister; and the amount paid to each recipient.

I presume the Deputy's question relates to fees paid under the criminal and civil legal aid schemes.

The information required is not readily available as regards the payments made under the criminal legal aid scheme, and it could not be compiled without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time. Following computerisation of the payments system earlier this year, it is hoped that a breakdown of individual lawyers' earnings under the scheme will be available for future years.

In so far as the scheme of civil legal aid is concerned I am informed by the Legal Aid Board that the amounts paid to both senior and junior counsel by the board in the period in question are as shown in the following table. Solicitors who provide services under the scheme at the board's various law centres are employed by the board and are not paid fees.
