Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farmers Paying Income Tax.

68.

asked the Minister for Finance, in respect of each year from 1985 to 1988, the total number of farmers from whom payments of income tax were received.

Following is the information requested:

Year

Number of farmers who paid income tax up to 31 May 1989 in respect of each year

1985-86

25,400

1986-87

25,100

1987-88

26,200

1988-89

37,000

The figures relate to full time farmers and farmers who, or whose spouses, also carry on another trade or profession.

The figure shown for 1988-89 relates to the number of farmers who made payments for that year. Under the new collection system associated with self-assessment as introduced in that year, such payments could represent a combined liability to income tax, PRSI and levies or just PRSI and levies only. Until an analysis of payments for the year has been completed a figure for the number of income taxpayers only cannot be provided.
