Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Family Income Supplement.

91.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the estimated additional annual cost if family income supplement were assessed on net pay rather than gross pay; the number of workers at present receiving family income supplement; and the additional number who would qualify if nett pay were the base.

Estimation of the additional number of workers who would qualify and the extra cost which would arise, if family income supplement were put on a net income basis, requires detailed data of the number of workers with families at each net weekly earnings level. Such data are not readily available.

The number of families receiving family income supplement as of September 1989 was 5,806, which represents an increase of 12.5 per cent on the corresponding figure for 1988.
