133.

asked the Minister for Education the number of both secretaries and caretakers paid for by her Department in the following groups of schools for each of the years from 1987 to 1989, inclusive: (a) fee paying secondary schools, (b) fee paying Protestant schools, (c) other secondary schools, (d) vocational schools and community colleges, (e) community schools and (f) comprehensive schools.

My Department funded the employment of 15 secretarial staff in fee paying secondary schools in 1987 and 12 such staff in 1988 and 1989; in each of these years four of the posts were in fee paying Protestant schools. In other secondary schools there were 253 clerical staff in 1987, 246 in 1988 and 243 in 1989. No grants are payable by my Department towards the employment of caretakers in secondary schools.

The number of clerical staff deployed by vocational education committees on duties as school secretaries during the period in question is: 1987, 147; 1988, 146 and 1989, 132.

The number of caretakers employed by the vocational education committees in vocational schools and community colleges is: 1987, 347; 1988, 334 and 1989, 317.
