Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Area Schools.

137.

asked the Minister for Education, in respect of her initiatives in favour of disadvantaged area schools, if any quantified educational objectives have been set in terms of such matters as reduced drop-out rates, improved test or examination performance and improved school attendance rates; the time within which these objectives are to be reached; and if she has not set such objectives, the way in which the success of the initiatives will be measured.

The allocation of additional teaching assistance and finances to schools in disadvantaged areas is made on the basis of assessment by my Department of the needs of the individual schools. The deployment of these additional resources is made by each school in accordance with the particular needs of the school. My Department's inspectorate monitor the school programmes and evaluates on a regular basis the general operation of the schemes in question.
