Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Customs Free Industrial Zone.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

101 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the proposal made recently by the East Border Region Committee to investigate the possibility of setting up a customs free industrial zone in the Border area; to the fact that the Under Secretary of State for Northern Ireland at the Department of Economic Development has given this proposal a warm reception in that he has seconded a consultant from the Northern Industrial Development Board to investigate this idea; and if he will reciprocate by setting up a similar investigation of this proposal on this side of the Border.

My attention has recently been drawn to the proposal referred to by the Deputy. I am currently giving urgent consideration to the proposal in conjunction with the various Departments concerned and a response will be made in due course.
