Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Consultant Orthodontists.

Dermot Fitzpatrick

Question:

122 Dr. Fitzpatrick asked the Minister for Health whether, in view of the difficulty in recruiting consultant orthodontists to the public service, the holder of such post would be given the same terms and conditions as their medical consultant counterparts; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the difficulties referred to by the Deputy. My Department has been reviewing the terms and conditions that apply to posts or consultant orthodontists and proposals for revised terms and conditions will be available shortly. The Deputy will be aware that the terms and conditions of appointment of consultant medical staff have been referred to the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector. I would also mention that there are differences in the nature of the service commitments of consultant orthodontists and consultant medical staff which have to be taken into account in any review of the terms and conditions of appointments for the former grade.
