Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Eurotechnet Project.

Paul McGrath

Question:

130 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the amount of the allocation for the Eurotechnet project in the Athlone area of County Westmeath under the auspices of the Westmeath Vocational Education committee conducted in 1987; if her Department terminated this course earlier than expected; if so, the reason; if there was a balance of money remaining from this project; the way in which she decided this money should be spent; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

An allocation of £20,000 was made in December 1987 to cover the material and equipment costs of a Eurotechnet project to be run within its area by the County Westmeath VEC. An application for ESF aid in respect of this and other similar projects was then before the EC Commission for consideration. The application had been put forward on the basis of a proposed three-year period of operation commencing 1 January 1988. Following refusal of aid by the Commission, the VEC was allocated a further £9,000 to meet additional expenditure in 1988 and notified that the Department would not be in a position to fund the project beyond the end of that year.
