Vol. 395 No. 8

Written Answers. - GATT Policies.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

44 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if Ireland intends to pursue any new policies through the GATT in view of world political developments; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland participates in the GATT as a member state of the European Community. In the current "Uruguay Round" of GATT trade negotiations, the Community has submitted proposals for new trade rules in all of the 15 areas under negotiation. Ireland contributed fully to the development of these Community proposals and will continue to play its part within the Community in the ongoing negotiations.

In common with other EC member states, Ireland attaches considerable importance to a successful conclusion to the Uruguay Round negotiations and to the future effective operation of the GATT. Given the nature and pace of international political developments, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, the need for a stable, effective GATT mechanism has never been greater.
