Vol. 395 No. 8

Written Answers. - Competition Legislation.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

50 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has any plans to introduce competition legislation in 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The agreed Programme for Government contains a commitment to the introduction of legislation to give effect in domestic law to provisions similar to Articles 85 and 86 of the Treaty of Rome after the Fair Trade Commission have presented their report to Government. I intend to deliver on this commitment as soon as possible and certainly this year.

The economic wellbeing of the country requires the establishment of a system that will prohibit anti-competitive practices and agreements. The Fair Trade Commission have furnished a report of their study of competition law and I am finalising proposals for legislation for submission to Government.
