Vol. 395 No. 8

Written Answers. - Finglas (Dublin) School.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

90 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that St. Fergal's school, Finglas, Dublin 11, has been closed for the second time since Christmas due to the level of vandalism to the school which opens on to derelict sites; and whether she accepts the urgent and immediate need for security fencing and alarms.

I am aware of the situation in relation to St. Fergal's national school, Finglas, Dublin 11, and I accept that special measures need to be taken to combat vandalism. The Department's architects have reported on the question of the provision of suitable perimeter fencing and the question of the sanction of a grant is being considered urgently in my Department. A decision in this matter will be conveyed to the school authorities at an early date.

My Department have not received any application from the school authorities for grant for an alarm system. I have, however, in the light of the Deputy's question arranged for an engineer to examine the matter. I will communicate with the Deputy when the engineer's report is available and has been considered.
