Vol. 396 No. 1

Written Answers. - Afforestation Development.

Jim Higgins

Question:

17 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Energy, in view of the fact that up to 30 per cent of the national available forestry raw material such as thinnings and clear fellings and residue from sawmills is located in the north-western region and, in view of the ongoing development of afforestation in the area, whether a pulp wood industry will be established in the region; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The industrial development agencies have day to day responsibility for the promotion of industrial development projects. The IDA are in contact with a number of potential investors with a view to establishing a new pulpwood using industry here.

No decision has been made on the location of a possible additional plant. Obviously the availability of raw material will be a significant factor in such a decision, but it would not by any means be the only one.
