Vol. 396 No. 1

Written Answers. - Moneypoint Landing Facilities.

Frank Crowley

Question:

66 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Energy whether he has had any discussions on the further use of deep sea landing facilities at Moneypoint, County Clare, which have substantial spare capacity.

The Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Bill, 1988, enabled the ESB to use their deep sea landing facilities at Money point for transhipment purposes. This major asset is currently underutilised and the ESB subsidiary company, ESB Industrial Holdings Limited, had been developing a project to more efficiently ulitise it. This was seen as the first phase in a long-term development plan. The plan was to develop a coal processing plant where suitable coal would be screened and washed for onward sale. The majority of the saleable coal would have been for the export market. Unfortunately, the project has run into industrial relations problems and the ESB have had to shelve their plans.

No further plans have yet emerged for the development of the deep water facilities at Moneypoint.
