Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Howth Plans.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

117 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline his plans for the future fishing and fish processing industries at Howth, Dublin 13; the investment proposals he has to further his plans for the port; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The State has been very supportive of any proposals which have been put forward for the region. Indeed, direct investment by my Department in the development of facilities at Howth harbour during the past decade exceeded £11.5 million.

Investment in fish processing is a matter, in the first instance, for private enterprise. State grants are available from various State bodies, including the IDA and An Bord Iascaigh Mhara, for suitable projects.

In addition, since the Fisheries Council meeting of 19 December 1989, grant assistance of up to 50 per cent is now available for the whole of Ireland from the EC under EC Council Regulation No. 4042/89.
