Vol. 396 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - International Organisations.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

22 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Communications if he will outline the international organisations to which his Department are affiliated; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As regards the functions administered by the Department of Communications, Ireland is a member of the following international organisations: the Universal Postal Union, the Conference of European Postal and Telecommunications Administrations, the International Telecommunications Union, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, the International Telecommunications Satellite Organisation, and the European Telecommunications Satellite Organisation.

Is there a cost factor involved?

Yes, we have to make a contribution to all the various organisations. I have the various objectives of the organisations but I do not have the cost. I will drop the Deputy a line and let him have the information.

Is it absolutely essential?

It is absolutely essential.

I am calling Question No. 23.

On a point of order, I understood it was now time to move to Justice questions.

There is a minute or two left.

We are working from different clocks, that is the reason I am on my feet.

The Chair is very conscious of the time available for these questions and to go on to questions to the Minister for Justice. The Deputy need have no worries about that.
