Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Battle of the Boyne Tercentenary Events.

Michael Bell

Question:

68 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that it is planned by the Orange Order to bring 30,000 followers to the site of the planned celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne on 14 July 1990; if he has had or if he plans to have consultations with the Garda Commissioner regarding the policing and security measures to be taken; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that a number of commemorative events are scheduled to take place later this year on the occasion of the Tercentenary of the Battle of the Boyne. The Garda Commissioner has informed me that these events have been, and will continue to be, the subject of regular consultation between the gardai and the organisers.

The policing measures to be taken on such occasions are matters for the professional judgment of the Garda authorities, and I am informed that tentative plans have been drawn up by the gardaí. These plans will be reviewed on a regular basis in the light of the continuing consultations with the organisers in regard to the nature of events and the numbers expected to attend.
