Vol. 396 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Bridge.

William Cotter

Question:

18 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make funds available to have the bridge on the national primary road at Emyvale, County Cavan, brought up to standard, having regard to the fact that the drainage programme which is being carried out by the Office of Public Works in that area cannot be completed unless the bridge is reconstructed; and when such works will be carried out.

The 1990 road grants which I have notified to Monaghan County Council include a grant of £160,000 for the improvement of Emyvale Bridge. The amount of this grant is sufficient to enable work to commence in 1990. The local authority are at present preparing contract documents for the scheme.

Is the Minister aware that the people who live on the national primary N2 are concerned — and perhaps this will alleviate it — that future development of national primaries will be centred on the east coast, particularly the Euro route system which is receiving some air space these days? Can he allay the fears of the people who live on the national primaries that this will not be the case and that the future development of the national primaries, particularly the sections of that road in County Monaghan which are in a very poor condition, will continue there regardless?

I concede the point that the bridge at Emyvale is inadequate. The humpbacked masonry arch bridge would not be satisfactory in that location and that is the reason the money is being allowed.

That disposes of Questions for today.

In view of the Maguire case, I seek to raise on the Adjournment the Government's scandalous inaction in the Nicky Kelly case.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the division of the extra 11 million gallons milk quota which is available to the farming community.

I will communicate with Deputy Cotter in respect of that matter.
